Funding Adugna’s Dream
Adugna dreams of becoming an airline pilot. He works hard while at school, excelling in math and physics. He loves his teacher and he is eager to learn. Unfortunately, the majority of the public schools in Ethiopia provide a less than adequate learning environment for its students. Because of the high student to teacher ratio, most students attending public school never receive the one-on-one support they may need. This causes some students to fall behind, and some to eventually drop out.
“When a country is developed, knowledge is developed.” – Adugna, age 14
The International Leadership Academy of Ethiopia (ILAE), founded by Haddis Tadesse, Country Representative to Ethiopia for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is an innovative college preparatory boarding and day school. ILAE is the first of five schools to be built in Africa’s least developed nations, with the goal of providing gifted students a secondary education comparable to the best schools in the world. Students are recruited based on their academic performance and leadership potential. ILAE is the much needed solution to prevent exceptional students from slipping through the cracks of the educational system.
A Bright Future
Adugna’s excellent academic standing and strong leadership abilities made him an ideal candidate to join ILAE’s first ninth grade class this September. To prepare for the coming school year, he participated in ILAE’s prep program that runs during after-school hours, weekends, and the summer. Although Adugna’s future is bright, he and students just like him throughout Ethiopia do not have the financial means to receive a high quality education. For that reason, Voice Ethiopia is asking for your support.
The Cost of Education
The cost of educating one child at the International Leadership Academy of Ethiopia is $7,500 per year. This cost includes his books, meals, computer, supplies, and other necessities. Every single dollar collected will go straight towards Adugna’s education.
The Future of Ethiopian Education
ILAE is home to state-of-the-art computer centers, science laboratories, world language labs, athletic fields, a media center, and dormitories for resident students and faculty. Adugna will have access to all of the resources necessary to receive a top-quality education and set him on the path towards becoming a pilot. He has the drive, self-motivation, and intelligence to achieve his goals. Now he just needs access to the proper resources to assure that he will.
Adugna says he is studying English and constantly working at perfecting his language skills because “as a pilot, I will need to be able to communicate with plane passengers.” He wants to be a pilot so that he can “help people travel,” and he dreams of working for Ethiopia Airlines. Adugna knows that he has a lot of hard work ahead of him, and he is up for the challenge.
